Nick, a Virginia native, took a non-traditional path into marine ecology. After getting an Associates degree, he worked as an electrician's helper for 6 years before going back to school. In 2019, he received a B.S. degree in Biology from Old Dominion University and transitioned into a M.S. degree at Florida International University. His research focuses on the facilitation of coral reef restoration through the enhancement of a native herbivorous crab (Maguimithrax spinosissimus) density on coral reefs in the Florida Keys.
