Dr. Alain Duran
Research Associate & Assistant Teaching Professor
Alain Duran is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at FIU and a Research Associate in the Institute of the Environment. He co-manages the Tropical Marine Ecology laboratory with Professor Butler. Alain obtained his Ph.D. in 2018 from FIU and for his dissertation studied the drivers of plant-herbivore interactions on Caribbean coral reefs (Florida, Cuba, and The Bahamas) and their impact on ecosystem resilience. Dr. Duran currently focuses on the ecology, conservation, and restoration of coral reefs, mainly on the ecological roles of herbivores and the dynamics and composition of cryptic coral reef macroalgal assemblages, especially turf-forming species and crustose coralline algae.
